“In Her Words”

View “In Her Words,” written and devised by Beth Blatt. The play tells the true and often tragic stories of six women who fled Rwanda, Myanmar, Honduras, Syria, the Gambia and Kazakhstan seeking a safer home in the U.S.

Refugee Chat Series
(December 2020)
We brought powerful speakers from around the globe together for what we coined a "refugee chat series". Speakers included Edafe Okporo from RDF Shelter, a Holocaust survivor paired with a Syrian refugee, and the owner of Emma's Torch, a food businesss that is empowering refugees in the kitchen in Brooklyn, New York.
Buy Food, Do Some Good (October 2020)
We teamed up with our partner, FEZ, Turkish Meze, to provide refugee families all over the TriState region (NY, NJ, and CT through partners such as Hearts & Homes, Elena's Light, and Welcome Home Jersey City) with bags of Middle Eastern food from their store.
Winter Coat and Boot Drive (September 2020)
We teamed up with our partner, Hearts and Homes for Refugees, to collect boots and coats at St. John's Episcopal Church, here in Larchmont. Nearly 50 volunteers served 500 clients in the TriState area.
Taste of Home (September 2020)
This year we celebrated Welcoming Week with "A Taste of Home" meal made by immigrants and refugees who are now our neighbors. We partnered with FEZ, Turkish Meze restaurant, located in Mamaroneck, to offer community members the opportunity to purchase an authentic meal. Nearly 400 meals were sold!

Stamp Out Despair
(August 2020)
We gathered volunteers, in a socially distanced fashion, around tables to put together writing materials for detainees so they can correspond with their families. All materials were supplied by NFR and several Students for Refugees groups participated from Scarsdale, White Plains and Pelham.
World Refugee Day (June 2020)
We celebrated WRD by inviting community members to share stories that explored the theme of “Find Your Way Home.”
One hundred people gathered together on Zoom to hear their stories that brought laughter and tears.
Autumn Cocktails at the Manor House (October 2019)
NF hosted a fundraiser at The Manor House, built in 1797, the oldest and one of the most historic houses in Larchmont. Larchmont native Herb Leventer provided homemade appetizers from Syria and Afghanistan, and we had live music by Dylan Connor, who writes songs about the refugee situation. Local politicians and clergy attended, including County Executive George Latimer.
In Her Words (June 2019)
NFR cast local women to perform in a play called “In Her Words: Refugee Women’s Stories on Stage” as a fundraiser. The night, which was attended by 100 people, also included a silent auction, an authentic Afghan meal created by a recently resettled family, and a discussion about the global state of refugees.

Boredom Book Buster Bags (June 2020)
We teamed up with our partner, Hearts and Homes for Refugees, to collect books and toys to help refugee families beat summer boredom. Bags went out to refugee families, asylum seeker families in Westchester, and refugee families in Jersey City.
Necessity Drive (clothing, household goods, medical items) (July 2017)
We partnered with Greater NYC Families for Syria and NuDay Syria to ship to Syrian refugees in camps in Turkey. Fifty volunteers, 500 bags of clothes, 50 walkers, 60 pairs of crutches, six wheelchairs, 50 strollers, and 150 boxes of goods.
Jodi Kantor (June 2017)
New York Times journalist Jodi Kantor, shared her experiences covering Syrian refugee resettlement in Canada. Other speakers included Merrill Zack of HIAS, local elected officials, and members of the community who are involved in domestic refugee resettlement efforts.
Syrian Refugee Fundraising Feast (June 2017)
Larchmont resident Herb Leventer cooked a homemade Syrian meal that included delicacies such as fatouche and tabouli. Members of the community came from all over the area - from all faiths, from all professions. They shared one thing in common: a real interest in helping refugees.

Every summer we invite volunteers and refugees that we support to gather in a park for a summer picnic.
